The National Association of Purchasing Management said its index of business activity in the Chicago area rose to 56.6 in December from 52.9 in November. New orders rose from 53.9 to 58.4, and prices paid dropped solidly from 76.2 to 63.8, but employment fell below expansionary levels, falling from 54.4 to 49.0.
