The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 293 points (2.4%) to close at 12,100, the S&P 500 Index dropped 32 points (2.4%) to 1,298, and the Nasdaq Composite retreated 58 points (2.6%) to 2,210. Crude oil tumbled $4.94 to $104.48 per barrel, and gold ended down a sharp $61.10 to $943.20 per ounce.
