The US government stepped in on Sunday and seized control of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac arguing that doing nothing could end up being much more costly to the economy.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 290 points (2.6%) to close at 11,510, the S&P 500 Index gained 25 points (2.1%) to 1,268, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 14 points (0.6%) to 2,270. Crude oil rose $0.11 to $106.34 per barrel, and gold ended down $0.30 at $802.50 per ounce.
