Stocks Close Lower, Sharp Drop In Overseas Markets

Existing home sales increased 5.5% in September to an annual pace of 5.18 million units, well ahead of the forecast of a 0.8% rise to 4.95 million units. More from Bloomberg...

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 312 points (3.6%) to close at 8,379, the S&P 500 Index fell 31 points (3.5%) to 877, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 52 points (3.2%) to 1,552. Crude oil lost $3.69 to $64.15 per barrel, and gold ended up $16.40 at $731.10 per ounce. For the week, the DJIA fell 5.4%, the S&P 500 Index was down 6.8%, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 9.3%.
