Weekly initial jobless claims rose 1,000 to a seven-year high of 497,000, above the forecast of 475,000. The Labor Department said that roughly 45,000 claims were related to the hurricanes, but the labor market remains very weak.
Factory orders fell 4.0% in August, worse than the forecast of a 3.0% decline. Durable goods orders were revised to -4.8% from -4.5%.
