The ISM Manufacturing Index dropped from 43.5 in September to 38.9, the lowest reading since 1982 and below the forecast of 41.0.
Construction spending fell 0.8% in September, below the forecast of a 0.3% decline. Residential construction remained in decline, but public construction slipped.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 5 points (0.1%) to close at 9,320, the S&P 500 Index declined 2 points (0.3%) to 966, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 5 points (0.3%) to 1,726. Crude oil lost $3.90 to $63.91 per barrel, and gold ended up $4.90 at $723.10 per ounce.
