Major Indices Close Lower, Led By Financials

Preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment fell from 61.2 in January to 56.2 in February, below the forecast of a decline to 60.2. The 12-month inflation expectation fell from 2.2% in January to 1.6%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 82 points (1.0%) to close at 7,850, the S&P 500 Index fell 8 points (1.0%) to 827, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 7 points (0.5%) to 1,534. Crude oil rose $3.53 to $37.51 per barrel, and gold fell $5.15 to $941.60 per ounce. For the week, the DJIA fell 5.1%, the S&P 500 Index lost 4.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite decreased 3.6%.
