Pending home sales for December jumped 6.3%, rising for the first time since August, well above the estimate of a flat reading. November was revised slightly higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 142 points (1.8%) to close at 8,078, the S&P 500 Index increased 13 points (1.6%) to close at 838, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 21 points (1.5%) to 1,516. Crude oil gained $0.70 to $40.78 per barrel, and gold fell $7.78 to $897.72 per ounce.
