The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 300 points (4.2%) to close at 6,763, the S&P 500 Index fell 34 points (4.7%) to 701, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 55 points (4.0%) to 1,323. Crude oil fell $4.61 to $40.15 per barrel, and gold decreased $16.08 to $926.28 per ounce.
