Existing-home sales rose for the fourth-straight month in July, rising 7.2% month-over-month to an annual rate of 5.24 million units, higher than the forecast of 5.0 million and an increase of 2.1%, and June figures were unchanged from the 4.89 million unit rate initially reported.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 156 points (1.7%) to close at 9,506, the S&P 500 Index rose 19 points (1.9%) to finish at 1,026, and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 32 points (1.6%) to 2,021. Crude oil rose $0.93 to $73.84 per barrel, and the Bloomberg gold spot price advanced $13.50 to $954.15 per ounce. For the week, the DJIA gained 2.0%, the S&P 500 Index rose 2.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.8%.
