Markets Ended Higher On Merger News

Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom are combining their UK mobile phone units to form the new industry leader.
Kraft Foods made a bid for Cadbury – which Cadbury rebuffed. More bidders such as Nestle and Hershey may propose competing bids.

Economic news included a record drop of $21.6 billion in consumer credit during July compared to the forecasted decline of just $4.0 billion. The data is nearly two months late and other reports on the health of the consumer for July have already been released.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 56 points (0.6%) to close at 9,497, the S&P 500 Index increased 9 points (0.9%) to finish at 1,025, and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 19 points (0.9%) to 2,038. Crude oil rose $3.08 to $71.10 per barrel, and the Bloomberg gold spot price fell $1.35 to $993.90 per ounce.
