Strong ISM Non-Manufacturing Index Reading

The ISM Non-Manufacturing Index for September climbed to 50.9, an improvement over the 48.4 recorded in August and ahead of consensus forecasts of 50.0. This report represented a return to growth for the services sector after 11 consecutive months of decline.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 112 points (1.2%) to close at 9,600, the S&P 500 Index climbed 15 points (1.5%) to 1,040, and the Nasdaq Composite increased 20 points (1.0%) to 2,068. Crude oil gained $0.46 to $70.41 per barrel, and the Bloomberg gold spot price increased $14.10 to $1,016.90 per ounce.
