Weekly initial jobless claims fell, declining by 43,000 to 440,000, versus last week's figure which was revised upward by 3,000 to 483,000, and compared to the consensus, which called for claims to decrease to 465,000. The four-week moving average, considered a smoother look at the trend in claims, dipped by 1,000 to 468,500.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 105 points (1.1%) to close at 10,144, the S&P 500 Index rose 10 points (1.0%) to 1,078 and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 30 points (1.4%) to 2,177. Crude oil rose $0.76 to $75.28 per barrel, and the Bloomberg gold spot price increased $21.95 to $1,094.05 per ounce.
