The NAHB Housing Market Index, which is the gauge of homebuilder sentiment fell to a level of 14 in July, from a downwardly revised reading of 16 last month. Economists had expected a reading of 16. Any reading below a level of 50 indicates more respondents feel conditions are poor and the index sits at the lowest level since April 2009.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 57 points (0.6%) to close at 10,154, the S&P 500 Index added 6 points (0.6%) to finish at 1,071, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 19 points (0.9%) to 2,198. Crude oil rose $0.53 to $76.54 per barrel,while the Bloomberg gold spot price declined $8.90 to $1,184.10 per ounce.
