The Commerce Department reported that personal spending for the month of August rose 0.6%, an increase of 0.4% was expected. Personal income rose 0.3% after July's rise of 0.5%.
The Chicago Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of business activity rose to 54.2 in September, from 53.8 in August.
