Stocks Soar On Possible Treasury Relief

Financials rallied sharply in the afternoon after a report that the United Kingdom banned short selling of financial stocks for the rest of the year, and a report that the Treasury is considering a Resolution Trust Corp-type facility to purchase distressed debt that has seized the credit markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 410 points (3.9%) to close at 11,020, the S&P 500 Index advanced 50 points (4.3%) to 1,207, and the Nasdaq Composite surged 100 points (4.8%) to 2,199. Crude oil rose $0.72 to $97.88 per barrel, and gold rose $6.10 to $856.60 per ounce.
