Earnings Pessimism, Financials Lead Decline

Housing starts for December fell 15.5% month-over-month to an annual rate of 550,000 units, below the estimate of 605,000. Building permits, an indicator of future projects, declined 10.7% to an annual rate of 549,000, below the estimate of 600,000 units.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 105 points (1.3%) to close at 8,123, the S&P 500 Index fell 13 points (1.5%) to 827, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 42 points (2.8%) to 1,465. Crude oil rose $0.12 to $43.67 per barrel, and gold ended up $8.10 at $858.20 per ounce.
